Standard form is another way to write an equation for a line. It is different from slope-intercept form ( y = mx + b ) because it presents x and y as two independent variables. Equations in standard form can be written "as a function of..." or "in terms of..." one of two independent variables.
Intercepts are one of many key characteristics of graphs. They are pretty easy to find because they involve the number zero. An x-intercept is the point at which a graph intersects the x-axis, meaning the x-intercept has a y-coordinate of zero. Therefore, in order to find the x-intercept, you would substitute zero for the y in the graph's equation and solve for the x-value. A y-intercept is the point at which a graph intersects the y-axis, meaning the y-intercept has a x-coordinate of zero. Therefore, in order to find the y-intercept, you would substitute zero for the x in the graph's equation and solve for the y-value. Since you only need two points to graph a line, the intercepts are a great tool for graphing. Once you find the x- and y-intercept of an equation, you can plot them and then connect them to graph the equation.
